Congrats go out to some members of the Pirates family. Shelby and Britney, two members of the Pirates U-18 Girls team, represented Edmonton in the Alberta Summer Games this week. The Edmonton team was also coached by Pirate president Kady Martin. The team lost by a kick in the gold medal game on Thursday, but still bring home silver. Congratulations ladies!

COACH’S CORNER

The depth that we have this season really showed Wed. night vs St Albert. We had close to 18 players away or injured, yet we still had a strong group out. The Pirates have worked hard all year on counter attack, and that they did 3 straight times in the first half, turning dropped balls and turnovers into trys. St Albert came out hard and took he play to us but sticking to our game plan we absorbed the pressure.
A very complete game, with the usual wide ball attack lead to a 50-5 win for the Pirates. Good work on keeping the points down, which has been an issue this year. We now go into a 2 week break, which will allow the team to recover and work on our overall fitness. The playoff drive is just around the corner….

The U-18 schedule has been posted under the Junior Rugby page. Pirates games will also be put in the Pirates Events Calendar. We will continue to take registrations for juniors throughout the season.

Coaches Corner- SR MEN ON A ROLL

After a couple of close losses to the Clan and Edson, the Pirates Sr. mens team have got themselves into a 3 game winning streak, with 60-0 vs St Albert, 45-24 vs Leduc and 36-22 vs Lep/Tigers.
The Pirates have proven that they are a team not to be taken lightly. With a game average of 42 points a game for, it’s obvious that we are looking to spread the ball wide and play some open exciting running rugby which, for the most part, we have done in every game this year. The flip side of that is an average of 21 points against a game, which is something we will be working hard to improve on during the second half of the season. So at the half way point of the season, we have some modest optimism that a playoff spot is in our future.- Mike Moss

Update to Junior Registrations

Thanks to all the juniors who came out to juniors night. Here is the updated dates/schedules for the upcoming season:

U-18 Boys practices are scheduled to being Tuesday, June 8th @ 7 PM and will be every Tuesday and Thursday through the summer. U-18 Girls practices are scheduled to begin Tuesday, June 15th @ 6:30 PM and will be every Tuesday and Thursday through the summer.

First games are scheduled to begin Wednesday, July 7th, 2010. All games will be on Wednesdays through July and August. Most will have a 7 PM kickoff. This means registrations and payments need to be received by Monday, July 5th, 2010 if you want to be eligible to play in this first game. We will continue to take payments and forms beyond this date. However, the AJRA needs more concrete numbers in order to plan the season schedule so we need players to be bringing in their registration forms and payments ASAP!! They have set a deadline of Friday, June 25th, 2010 to get a MINIMUM of 10 players registered per team in order for them to schedule us into the league.

It was a wonderful night for Rugby, the sky’s cleared. No rain, but a soft pitch. The perfect situation for a Friday night game. The Pirates have been trying to play some fast, wide rugby. So the last 2 games, having been played in full out rain storms, lead to two straight (close) losses… We could sense that things were going to be different tonight. A full bench and lots of ball movement, was a little too much for St Albert RFC to handle tonight. A very entertaining 60-0 victory for the Pirates was the result of some hard work done. The backs ran at will, at times. The forwards dominating the scrum, set a perfect attack platform as well. TGIF!

RUGBYFEST 2010

So I headed out on Sunday Morning, not expecting what to find for our 10 am game. What I experienced was probably the best Rugbyfest moment I have ever seen. I arrived to discover players in Pirates Jerseys. 2 actual Pirates and 3 guys they had found and knew, or had heard, a little bit about rugby. I went into the change room to try and see if there was some stragglers. I find Johnny in the change room, rushing around trying to find his stuff. Now this was a BIG game he was late for. The Pirates were sitting at 0 wins, 2 losses and 2 ties (from the game we played against ourselves). It was plus four, with rain/snow coming down. We had managed to convince the LT’s to play Five on Five rugby (full field, good idea). So this was a Big game, 10th place was on the line.
So Johnny can’t find his boots anywhere…. So he has some decisions to make.
1. Call it a day and watch the game.
2. Tough it out in runners and do what he can.
3. Go to the local Rugby vender and drop $100 on new boots so he can play the last 3 minutes of “Fives”.

Well of course Johnny chose #3…… and managed to get the last 3 minutes in of the Fives game in. A well fought 45-5 loss. We were able to secure 11th place.
Johnny defines what being a Pirate is all about! Truly a great Rugbyfest moment.

Well the Pirate Men have got off to a fairly good start to the 2010 season. With wins over Cold Lake (54-12) and the Druids (50-20). Both games were close until Half time until the Pirates pulled away in the second half of both games. The hard work the guys did in the winter, as well as on their own away from practice has really showed so far. Lots of season to go and lot’s more hard work ahead, however we are going in the right direction.
