High School Sevens Directions and Parking

DIRECTIONS

Pirates fields are located at 1904 167 Avenue. There is no access to 167 Avenue from Manning Drive anymore so if you are heading north on Manning you must turn right at 153 Ave and then head north on either of your next left turns (either 34 or 26 Street). From there turn right on 167 Avenue and you should see the fields once you get to the train tracks. Alternatively, if you are heading north via Victoria Trail you would turn right at 153 Ave, then left at 18 Street and left at 167 Avenue. If you are looking for vehicle parking do not turn into the main parking lot — instead turn onto 18th street heading north from 167 Avenue and head for a driveway at the end of the Pirates fields. If you are coming south on Manning from out of town you would turn left onto 18 Street and just continue from there.

PARKING

Due to the large number of people coming to the Pirates fields on Friday we are strongly encouraging people to carpool as much as possible. The number of teams coming in means many buses need to be parked, limiting room for other vehicles. We will be attempting to accommodate the large number of vehicles by using our overflow parking in the grassy area towards the back of the fields. Access to this area is via 18 Street, not 167 Avenue. There will be parking coordinators trying to fit as many people in as possible — please follow their directions so we can maximize the use of space.

The parking situation will be organized as follows:

1. All buses will be parked in the main parking lot at the front of the clubhouse, with access from 167 Avenue. This area will also be used for anyone needing to pick up or drop off individuals. Please do not park and leave your vehicle, as we need to ensure the buses have enough room to manoeuvre around the lot.

2. All spectator parking will be in the overflow area at the back of the fields, with access from 18 Street.

3. All Pirate volunteer parking will be by the garage in the grassy area. Please carpool as much as possible, or get dropped off/picked up.

U7 to U15 Notice

Trainings this week will be Thursday evening from 6-7 at Pirates and from 6-7 (or 630-730 for the U13/U15s) on Friday at the Druids club.

The first minis festival of the season is this Saturday May 5. U7-U11s will run from 9-10:20 and the U13/U15s will run 10:30-12:00. I will be able to give you a better idea of how the festival will run on Thursday.

Run For Wildlife

A big thank you to the Pirate runners (Latoya, Kirsten, Andrea and Robyn) who braved the April Fool’s Day snow to run 5 km for the Edmonton Wildlife Rehabilitation Society. Their entries helped support the local organization and the Pirate family is happy to have participated. Hopefully next year will bring more runners and less snow!!

High School Sevens Tournament 2012

Pirates is currently accepting registrations for its annual high school sevens tournament. The date of the tournament is Friday, May 4th, starting at 3 PM. Please see the HS 7’s Invite 2012 for more information on how to register.

And for any Pirates looking to work off volunteer hours, please contact our volunteer coordinator for the event, Michelle Maycock. We need volunteers from about noon until the event finishes (~9 pm) and there are a variety of jobs that need to be filled.

Pirates are accepting registration and payments for all players for the 2012 season. Please see the How to Register Page for more information on the process. If you require more information, feel free to contact the appropriate representative (found on the Senior Rugby and Junior Rugby Pages).

We have also created a 2012 Membership Manual which includes most of the information you need to get started with Pirates (including the information above). Please read through this as it does contain valuable information and frequently asked questions.

The Board looks forward to seeing everyone as we push towards another successful season.

Hair Massacure Wrap-Up

The Pirates were proud to be a part of the 10th Hair Massacure Event at West Edmonton Mall. We even had a last minute hair shaver — Petie and her donation manager Mike Muise managed to raise $225 from the Pirate volunteers that day. Thank you to all of our volunteers who were able to make this community outreach activity a success. Your efforts are greatly appreciated, not just by the club, but by the community.

The first fundraising opportunity of the 2012 season is upon us! The Rockers have graciously approached us with the chance to partner with them to provide security for the Metropolis Winter Festival, which runs every Saturday and Sunday from New Year’s Day to Family Day (inclusive). The festival is held downtown in Churchill Square and the volunteer hours are from 12-4 pm on ALL the days listed. We are being asked to provide volunteers for the following shifts:

ERU 2011 Awards

The ERU handed out it’s 2011 Awards on Saturday. In addition to the EW2 City Champions, the Pirates had another winner — Jenn Bird, who won the Laura Jackson Cup as the top female player in the union. Congratulations again to the women on their city championship and to Jenn for her tremendous season.
